Started June 9 2016 (or so)......June 12, finding it hard to put down. What a great story, but a grizzly one!......June 14, I will probably finish this tomorrow. Quite the page turner. I didn't go for a walk in the forest by myself before, and I certainly won't start. Twice I have had bears at my cabin, but never when I was there. (First time he just left claw marks all over the trees, and pooped a lot, second time about 15 years later, climbed up on my sisters picnic table and was peering in her trailer windows, this according to a neighbour, who was watching it. Ripped up her new picnic table cover! Oh I forgot the time we arrived at dusk to see something in the middle of our yard with a skunk walking around it. Turned out is was our stainless steel can with the bird seed in it. He didn't get the lid open, but he sat on it and bent the can until the lid didn't fit anymore and the seed poured out! Funny thing was, the shed was still closed! On further investigation, we found that he had hooked a claw into the door, and just pulled untill the screws gave on the hasp. The wind must have blown the door shut again. Interesting that nothing in the shed was moved or broken, but he had to pull that can out from under the work bench and get it out of there......he was very neat about it! I have seen them from a distance.....once in the 22 years we have been there. However, the people across the lake (and more in the trees) have them at their place more frequently. (and they feed the birds a lot!) Anyway, after reading this I will be more careful about going to the outhouse at night. Skunks can get the adrenaline going, but a bear would be much worse!!!!......I lied! I had forgotten that I saw one last summer, cross the road in front of me while on the highway, almost at the cabin. When I got there my sister said that she had been hearing bear bangers going off for quite a while, so I think he was at the acreages just down the road. At first I thought he was a big dog, then by the time I realized what he was, I just saw a big bum beetling it up the hill on the side of the road. Nice to know that he doesn't like those bangers! I just remembered that I also saw one about 10 min down the highway a couple of years ago, in a field, thought he was a bull at first, and then did a double take. Hmmm, seems to be quite a few of these teddy's around, now that I think about it. Guess I won't be doing too much bird watching this year....at least not the kind of birds that like to eat seeds! Plenty of bluebirds, swallows, robins, woodpeckers, herons, ospreys and eagles to look at!.......................Fast forward to 2017......(We read out loud to each other almost every night, 5 or more pages each.....a great way to share a book.) This was our "read-out-loud" selection beginning in May 2017
