Moliere is a down-and-out actor and playwright who is up to his ears in debt. The wealthy Jourdain offers to cover that debt so that Molière's theatrical talents might help Jourdain win the heart of a certain widowed marquise. Disguised as a priest, Molière becomes a guest in Jourdain's palace on the subtext of teaching Jourdain the craft of the stage, all this to the annoyance of Jourdain's wife, Elmire. But, soon after, the confrontation between Elmire and Molière turns seductive. Jourdain enlists the aid of a well-connected and scheming acquaintance to help him pursue the widowed marquise.

Great movie, great acting by Duris and Morante. Also I thought the music score was very original and fitting.

This was a good production but I have been spoiled by another version written and directed by Ariene Mnouchine. Théâtre du Soleil Meets the Cinema: The Acting and Mask Work in Ariane Mnouchkine’s Molière was absolutely unforgettable. This is a theatrical performance which rivals Grand Opera and Cirque du Soleil's best. It is one of a handful of films which I have never forgotten and can see again and again. The story of Moliere's life is divided into two DVDs covering the First and Second Epoques. Only the French SÉCAM version was available for several years, but it is now available in NTSC format which is unfortunately without English subtitles. Both SÉCAM and PAL versions are subtitled. I wish the library would get a copy. This is a truly superb and unforgettable Moliere. There is a clip from the death scene on You Tube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIpoWXVAWEU) which was a poor choice because the low lighting makes the action difficult to see on a computer screen.

Good movie, lots of humour, but has a bit of a sad ending - so I wouldn't call it a comedy.

What an unexpected triumph of comedy! I haven't seen anything this entertaining since "Impromptu". Romain Duris (Moliere) ends up masquerading as a priest in the house of his patron while instructing him in the composition of a play to impress his hoped-for mistress. Duris has fantastic facial expressions which, along with the quirky plot, make for some riotous moments, usually with his bourgeois patron as the centre of the joke. My only complaint was that I had to use subtitles & missed out somewhat on the visual feast - quel dommage!

I'm not certain how much having to read the subtitles took away from my enjoyment of this film , or perhaps I was just expecting something different ; either way I didn't feel that this film could be rated anything more than " good".
The performances were excellent and the humour was both subtle and outlandish. The cinematography and costumig were stunning.

Fabulous! I thoroughly enjoyed this smartly performed, directed, and filmed movie. After being disappointed by Bill Irvin's perfomance of Scapin at ACT theatre, I was more than relieved and happy to see people truely enjoying the wit of Moliere, which showcases his many levels of understanding humanity. Bravo!
