An essential masterwork by Nobel laureate Saul Bellow--now with an introduction by J. M. Coetzee

Expecting to be inducted into the army to fight in World War II, Joseph has given up his job and carefully prepared for his departure to the battlefront. When a series of mix-ups delays his induction, he finds himself facing a year of idleness. Saul Bellow's first novel documents Joseph's psychological reaction to his inactivity while war rages around him and his uneasy insights into the nature of freedom and choice.

At best, I rated Dangling Man with just an average score of only 2.5 stars.

Written in the format of a diary - I have to say that there were a number of times when Dangling Man's stark narrative just couldn't hold my full attention.

Yes. Of course, there were some worthwhile moments in Dangling Man's story, as well (especially near the end), that did mange to pique my interest to some degree.

But, generally speaking - This particular tale of an unemployed, young man waiting to be drafted into the war was, from my perspective, mostly a "run-of-the-mill" bit of storytelling.

*Note* - Dangling Man (now 72 years old) was novelist, Saul Bellow's first literary work to attract public attention..... Originally from Quebec, Canada - Saul Bellow died, in 2005, at the age of 89.... (*Watch "Saul Bellow" video-clip*)
