'Emil and the Detectives' by Erich Kastner was a fun read. Emil is the victim of a dastardly theft. Through the help of the good-hearted kids he meets, Emil and his new friends capture a notorious thief. The translation is in up-to-date English.

This 1929 novel will always win points with young readers because of the deep respect it affords them. For example, when Emil discovers he is the victim of a crime, he approaches the problem with mature realism: he already knows that no adult will believe him, because he is just a kid. How he takes matters into hand and achieves sweet justice is a study in wish fulfillment no child can resist. This translation (by W. Martin) jarringly introduces contemporary slang into the story, to poor effect.
