A young serving woman is accused of being an accomplice in a brutal double murder in the 1840s. After she has been incarcerated several years, a doctor is commissioned to study her and determine her guilt or innocence. Grace tells her story in a fragmented, episodic fashion as the doctor, her lawyer, and other secondary characters ponder her character and the nature of her crime. Readers may also appreciate the elegantly written, provocative novels by Jane Smiley, Rosellen Brown, Joan Didion, and Jane Hamilton.
