Dr. Henry Chiver is a surgeon who has trouble getting his hands on corpses for dissection in 1830s London. He leaves London after coming under suspicion of being involved in a plot to supply surgeons with corpses through murder. He moves to Sunderland in hopes of resurrecting his career and reputation, and encounters Gustine, a fifteen-year-old prostitute who rents a fancy dress from her landlord in hopes of bringing in a higher paying clientele. Her infant son's heart is outside of his chest, a rare anatomical defect. To help keep him alive, Gustine agrees to help supply Chiver with anatomical specimens. As a cholera epidemic grips the city, the story of Gustine's efforts to protect her child is interwoven with Chiver's conflict between his desire to advance medical knowledge and the grisly means for doing so in the days before legally available cadavers. A large cast of sharply realized Dickensian figures populates this atmospheric and often chilling period reconstruction.
