For those who have not yet seen "The Omega Man," the albino mutants were normal humans prior to germ warfare. Germs have caused their albinism which leads to insanity and eventually all of the mutants will die from the plague. Anthony Zerbe is great as Matthias, the charismatic leader of the albino mutants.

IMHO, "The Omega Man" is a cult classic. Considering that it is a relatively early science fiction film, I would rate it at 5.0 stars. Just imagine what a talented director could do today with a blockbuster budget and computer-generated special effects.

I believe that (back in 1971) $9 million was a substantial sized budget for any Hollywood film - And, yet, (with the exception of but a few fiery explosions, thrown in for good measure) I couldn't, for the life of me, see where all that money was spent in The Omega Man. (The make-up effects, in particular, really sucked, big-time)

Yep. If you ask me - The Omega Man was one of the leanest-looking, big-budget productions (from the early-1970s) that I've ever seen. Believe me, this one was a prime example of amateur movie-making on all counts.

On top of all the inferiority that prevailed in The Omega Man (as well as all of the unintentional humour that punctuated the story) - I found that I just couldn't take this Sci-Fi tale at all seriously. (Its dire message of worldwide plague was less than convincing and, overall, handled in a very dull-edged fashion)

And, speaking about actor Charlton Heston - Is this dreary, no-talent, lunkhead really considered to be one of the Hollywood greats of yesteryear? Is he really!?

Anyway - Regardless of the fact that The Omega Man was adapted for the screen from Richard Matheson's story "I Am Legend" - I swear that they were actually making up this nonsense as they went along. From start to finish - The Omega Man completely disgraced Matheson's story.

Yes, it's cheesy, but this is still my favorite film version of Richard Matheson's "I am Legend," which was also filmed as "Last Man on Earth" with Vincent Price and under its original title with Will Smith. Heston chews scenery and there's a steamy interracial kiss. Part of his dystopian sci-fi trilogy, which also includes "Planet of the Apes" and "Soylent Green." "The Simpsons" parodied this on one of their Halloween specials.

Yes, this is a "classic" but it hasn't aged very well. It's slightly fun because of all the 70s stuff, the dated lingo, and all the little flaws you don't see in the movies anymore, like the obvious use of stunt doubles or the slight movement of actors playing dead - but otherwise it's just kind of painfully bad.

It's a shame that even though (Richard Matheson's) storyline had so much potential, with such a strong creative foundation, the film is just covered with too much cheese. The creepy ghoulies that are just plain laughable are a mixture of (ready?): spear-chucking anti-technology Amish-like vampire-ish albino zombies in matching satin monk robes and groovy mirrored sunglasses... whew... And when Charlton Heston isn't walking around shirtless, he enjoys wearing a puffy shirt and a smoking jacket, swirling his brandy snifter. All this, and a Muzak score, too. Hell of an apocalypse. It's too bad, because with a little effort, (and $$), it could've been a lot better. (The best line is when the little girl asks Heston if he's God... LOL!! Moses, maybe...)

Call me a classic movie buff, but for me this is one of the best science fiction films of the period, along with (and strangely enough also featuring Charlton Heston) Soylent Green and Planet of the Apes. This is a must see for any science fiction fan as well as fans of I Am Legend as that is the book that movie is based on.

Is it me, or does Heston play the same character in all his films? How he stays so calm when all those bad guys are trying to kill him is incredible, he must have worked with the A-Team.

Two years after much of humankind was destroyed in a global war with biological weapons, Dr. Robert Neville leads a solitary existence in Los Angeles. Those humans that do remain are pigment-less albino creatures that roam the night destroying what remnants that may exist of the previous civilization. Neville, who had worked on an antidote to the virus, is one of their main targets. By day, he searches for their nests while they sleep. He comes across a small band of survivors, mostly children, but which includes two adults. Having injected himself with his experimental serum several years before, Neville in fact may carry the immunities needed to reverse the creatures' condition. The only question is whether he can survive their constant attacks long enough to prove it.
