This movie is unforgettable... It is a must watch. Though the real experience is watching it in the theater and it was conceived like many other Bertolucci films, it is still enjoyable in a DVD. At the end of the story, when Pu Yi visits the forbidden city and pays his admission ticket, you feel that you are right there with him, and that you lived all those experiences too. The soundtrack is extremely beautiful by Ryuichi Sakamoto. My favorite movie. As I said the only catch is this: It was made to be enjoyed in a good theater, a big screen and the music and quality of sound is crucial.

This was one of those scan the DVD's, while picking up another book. Mostly a curiosity yet it was a phenomenal and surprising choice! Rich in history and authenticity by way of location and "Downton Abbey" attention to the dress and moods of the time. I was only 7 years old when this saga began to play out, so it was, for me, an extraordinary lesson in history. In addition to a comparison of China/Japan relationship, and how this has all evolved. Once more our Library has given me the gift of a worthy DVD to view.

I saw this when it came out & was awed by the cast, history & production. John Lone was superb. The space of time & better understanding of history made this much better the second time viewing.

One of my favorite movies, now. It gives alot of information of Pu Yi's life.
I think a good choice was made of the actors playing him as a young man, and older.
