One-of-a-kind filmmaker-philosopher Terrence Malick has created some of the most visually arresting movies of the twentieth century, and his glorious period tragedy Days of Heaven, featuring Oscar-winning cinematography by Nestor Almendros, stands out among them. In 1910, a Chicago steel worker (Richard Gere) accidentally kills his supervisor and flees to the Texas panhandle with his girlfriend (Brooke Adams) and little sister (Linda Manz) to work harvesting wheat in the fields of a stoic farmer (Sam Shepard). A love triangle, a swarm of locusts, a hellish fire - Malick captures it all with dreamlike authenticity, creating at once a timeless American idyll and a gritty evocation of turn-of-the-century labor.

This was a snore. Kept waiting for it to get better but it never did. Reminds me of Gere's movie Breathless which was another boring movie.

Set in 1916, the film follows two lovers (played by Richard Gere and Brooke Adams) who, posing as siblings, are hired on as seasonal workers in the Texas Panhandle. When they find out their wealthy boss, (Sam Shepard) is dying of an unspecified illness, the couple scheme to inherit the farmer’s fortune through seduction and subterfuge. Eventually the lines between the genuine and the affected become blurred as real feelings evolve between the farmer and his new wife, while suspicion mounts concerning the true nature of her relationship with her ‘brother'.

I am going to side with KCLS patron that found "Days of Heaven" the most poetic and beautiful movie they had ever seen. The movie has a young Richard Gere and a young Sam Shepard. Both actors play understated roles that make them all the more authentic. The story concerns families living in the Midwest growing wheat in the early 1900's. I loved the characters. Each has their flaws as we all do. ""Days of Heaven" gives us a glimpse of a life that has long since past!\
P.S. The film has been selected for distribution by Criterion Collection. All I know about them is that they select films they feel are classic and need to be seen by movie fans all over the world. Any research of Criterion Collection on the KCLS website will show you an array of award winning movies.

A boring story. I checked this out to see Sam Shepard who died in 2017. Pointless story. Interesting vintage vehicles and airplanes.

I gave this movie (4) stars. i watched this movie yesterday again for the second time and thoroughly enjoyed it. I had watched it in l978 or 1980 but did not really get into it. This time around I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and all the actors, especially the performance of Sissy Spacek. Learning that Sam Shepard acted in this movie made it especially enjoyable for me. The first time I saw this movie I had no idea that he was the mystery Raggedy Man. How clever the ending! Thanks to Hoopla's listing of Sam Shepard's body of work, I plan to view all his movies when possible. The man was a literary genius!

Richard Gere and Sam Shepard in their youth. A visually stunning movie. I remember seeing this in the NAC when they used to show feature movies in the large hall with the big fabric curtain. Long time ago, but still a wonderful movie.

I've seen The Tree Life and To The Wonder - both of which I liked. then The New World and now Days of Heaven neither of which I liked as much as the later films.

I thought the acting was stilted. there is one scene where Sam Shepard is looking sideways at Brooke Adams and I had a flashback to Ricky Nelson - of Ozzie and Harriet - in his rock and roll days.

Probably the best cinematography I've ever seen.

An unusual and visually satisfying movie. The photography was so good that it earned the movie an Oscar. Dialog is very sparse and there didn't seem to be a great deal of the director doing what directors are supposed to the actors direction. Terrence Malik directed "Badlands" just prior to this movie so it's not surprising that it is so unusual. The thing that surprised be the most was that Sam Shepard actually looked young at one time in his life.
