Lars is a sweet but shy guy who has a hard time talking with his family, coworkers, and neighbors. Although his family fears the worst when Lars brings home a life-sized companion doll who he thinks is a real girlfriend, named Bianca, a doctor encourages them to play along with him so that he can work through his delusions. The whole community rallies to his support, and Lars begins to deal with all of his emotions. He even begins to develop feelings for Margo, an attractive co-worker, in what becomes "a hilariously unique love triangle."

This film is just a joy. Not so much of a fairy tale as some might think. But the real storyline isn't about a strange relationship, instead it's about looking beyond eccentricities. It's about how people deal with each other's individual needs, and how whole communities can begin to open up as people let go of their phobic fear-of-association and learn to listen. And it's about allowing others to tell their own stories in their own way. A brilliantly crafted story, and an excellent film, superbly acted--I have new respect for Ryan Gosling. There's really nothing about this film I didn't like.

The sweetest, saddest, funniest movie which I have seen in a very long time. In my opinion what keeps the movie from being over the top, it does stretch the imagination to the limit, is the cast. They all did a superb job.

Despite some great performances this “inflatable-chick” flick is a manipulative one-joke weeper that takes a cute idea and runs it into the ground; the ending is almost too embarrassing to watch. All those quirky characters and homespun wisdom are just so much fluff designed to make the movie look less ridiculous than it really is. Perhaps Gillespie was aiming for the same idiosyncratic charm as Fargo, but all he delivers is a nauseatingly saccharine musing on the curative power of insanity. Uggh!

I enjoyed this for what it was - a fairy tale style fantastical little collection of relationships & exchanges between people who seemed to all know each other pretty well. There are examples of gentle humor, family guilt, wry commentary, sweet affection and patience. Yes, it's one sidedly rose-colored, but considering how many films are so one sidedly not - I say Yay!

Love this movie so much. Lars is eccentric but harmless; as the movie unwinds, we learn the cause of some of his eccentricity; and as the town where he lives fully accepts him and shows him their love through the manner he chooses, the healing begins. Sweet, funny, very touching. Just a wonderful mixture of the very ordinary and the extraordinary.

Reverend Bock: Lars asked us not to wear black today. He did so to remind us that this is no ordinary funeral. We are here to celebrate Bianca's extraordinary life. From her wheelchair, Bianca reached out and touched us all, in ways we could never have imagined. She was a teacher. She was a lesson in courage. And Bianca loved us all. Especially Lars. Especially him.

Best line of the Movie
Lars:"I have a prior commitment to a school trustees meeting on Friday. Actually, I'll be free after I drop of Bianca. She's been elected to the board." Watch the movie to find out why this line is a scream!
