Filled with the lyrical genius that has earned Winton international acclaim and a loyal readership worldwide, Breath is the coming-of-age story of two thrill-seeking boys who surf for danger of all kinds on the untamed coast of Western Australia. As the two boys fall under the thrall of Sando, a veteran big-wave surfer, and his enigmatic wife, Eva, the two adults initiate the boys into forbidden worlds of peril, testing the boundaries of athleticism, friendship, sexuality and mortality.

nbsp;

Breath is a story about the wildness of youth--the lust for excitement and terror, the determination to be extraordinary, the wounds that heal and those that don't--and about learning to live with its passing.

P.S. to include

Soon to be a movie, this evocative novel explores the moments between life and death and the exhilaration found in risk. Beautiful descriptive writing by Tim Winton as always but there are strong themes and language as well.

An enjoyable, easy read that took me back to me young surfie days. I found the ending a bit disappointing and, to a degree, obvious. I prefer Tim Winton's Dirt Music and recommend that book over this one. All the same, it kept me involved and entertained.

An already tenuous friendship between two adolescent boys changes when they begin to hang around with an older surfer and his wife. The tension builds as the teens cross the divide between excitement and danger-seeking, and you can feel the rush of the surf on every page. An edgy read, by one of Australia’s most acclaimed writers.

Love Tim Winton- spare and unsentimental. Why do his novels remind me of NOrthern Ontario? Gritty, characters isolated by geography as much as they are from the rest of their community...ok. A literary Northern Ontario.
This a compelling read-surfing, coming of age, disillusionment- glorious writing.
