Saramago portraits an imaginary encounter between Fernando Pessoa and Ricardo Reis, who venture back to Portugal after the establishment of the dictatorship of general Salazar. "The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis" describes the country during dictatorship and highlights views using Pessoa's poetic aspect which have long been forgotten in history. Copyright © Libri GmbH. Beautifully written book about a doctor and his relationships in Lisbon, 1936, 16 years after his return from exile in Brazil. The events of Europe are built in the story smoothly. The characters are simple everyday persons. The atmosphere hints at the boiling future.

A poet returns to Salazar-era Portugual from Brazil, wanders the rainy streets, talks to a dead poet, falls in love with one woman and has an affair with another. On the surface this doesn't sound like much but in the hands of a great writer like Saramago it turns into a fascinating meditation on life.

as an extensive reader of all things psychological and classic fiction, i can say with conviction that this is one of my favorite novels ever written. anyone who takes the time to experience this will have it change her/his perception of the world.
