Although Lilly is British, she is brought up as a Muslim in Morocco. She is orphaned at a young age, when her hippie parents are murdered. While growing up, Lilly's guardian teaches her the Koran. Later sent to Ethiopia, Lilly starts a religious school, although the community never completely accepts her. She meets a young doctor and falls in love; however as time goes on, the political climate becomes troublesome and Lilly is forced to leave her lover and seek refuge in England. There, as a practicing Muslim, she is treated as an outsider but she refuses to abandon her faith. True to herself, she continues to teach the Koran, establishes a school, and founds a community organization to help refugees from Ethiopia.
