Jason is an American teenager who is obsessed with Hong Kong cinema and kung-fu classics. He makes an extraordinary discovery in a Chinatown pawnshop: the legendary stick weapon of the Chinese sage and warrior, the Monkey King. With the lost relic in hand, Jason unexpectedly finds himself traveling back to ancient China. He meets the drunken kungfu master, Lu Yan; an enigmatic and skillful Silent Monk; and the vengeance-bent Golden Sparrow. Jason is lead on a quest to return the staff to its rightful owner, the Monkey King, who has been imprisoned in stone by the evil Jade Warlord for five hundred years. Along the way, while attempting to outmaneuver scores of killers, Jason learns about honor, loyalty and friendship and the true meaning of kungfu.

Watched this quite sometime ago and fond of the characters and the Monkey King connection to Boston twist:

On Cable a year ago of a modern day "Monkey King" fusion about a Boston kid who traveled through a worm hole and met up with three characters in China who helped him to release the "Monkey King" imprisoned over 500 years by an evil soldier God. Helps to understand the story with the material in bonus disc or read up before watching:

Stunning, funny and heart warming. If you like Kung fu, you'll love this movie. If you have never seen a Kung Fu movie before, this is an excellent movie to fall in love with this genre.

I didn't have high hopes for a kung fu movie written and directed by Americans, with an American teenager as the main character, but this movie is actually a lot of fun, clearly a loving tribute to Chinese wuxia films. Just getting to watch Jackie Chan and Jet Li is worth the price of admission, but the scenery, costuming, and special effects are also great. And the mash-up of standard kung fu movie tropes (as well as all of the subtle and not-so-subtle references to older kung fu movies) all make this a fun ride. It won't change your life, but you'll be solidly entertained.

This is a solid film all around and gives action fans something they've wanted for years... namely a fight scene between Jet Li and Jackie Chan.

okay, so most of this movie is pretty ridiculous, and the kid is one of the worst actors ever, but the action sequences by jet li and jackie chan are awesome. these guys may be getting old but they still perform some of the best martial arts around.

Watchable (Fair) - Forbidden Kingdom (2008) **½ 113 min. starring Michael Angarano (a virtual unknown), Jet Li and Jackie Chan. Very predictable adventure yarn works in some level only because of the fantastically beautiful landscape shots, the color, the fight sequences and the fantasy-drenched feel. At times, you’d thik you’re watching a video game. And as such, this film is definitely directed towards the gaming crowd and younger viewers. There’s a scene in this film that has gone down in history because it’s the first time that Jet Li and Jackie Chan dropped the gloves and went toe to toe - doesn’t it sound like WWF?
