Princess Aurora is born to King Stefan & his wife. At a ceremony for her, fairies - Flora, Fauna and Merryweather - bestow gifts of magic on the child. But the evil sorceress, Maleficent, shows up and places a curse on the princess - where Aurora will die on her 16th birthday after touching a poisoned spinning wheel. Merryweather tries to undo the damage by casting a spell that will allow princess Aurora to awake from an ageless sleep with a kiss from her true love. The fairies take Aurora to their cottage and raise her as their own child. On her 16th birthday, Aurora meets Prince Phillip and the two fall in love. Maleficent kidnaps the Prince and she tricks Aurora into touching a spinning wheel. Realizing that the Prince is in trouble, the good fairies head to Maleficent's castle and spring the Prince loose. But the Prince soon finds himself up against Maleficent when she turns herself into a fire-breathing dragon. Now the Prince has to be strong enough to withstand the powers of the evil Maleficent.

I had a massive crush on Prince Phillip when I was younger. I fell hard for the unique animation that looks medieval and opulent, the gorgeously terrifying Maleficent in both human and dragon form, three delightful bickering fairies, and, of course, the color-changing dress!

Most surprising was how much I had forgot about the story. For most of the movie the princess is awake. The evil of Maleficent is unexplained and arbitrary. The goodness of Aurora is just assumed, and she does absolutely nothing, eventually falls under the curse and wakes up again; she is just a pretty doll that can move and sing (a recurring characteristic of many Disney heroines).

I LOVE the art style of this movie. However, and even though its the point of the character, having Aurora be comatose for the last third of the movie does take away from some of the suspense.

Hello, darlings! - This animated love story is one of Disney Studios' most enchanting of all.

"Some Day My Prince Will Come".....

This beautiful, 1959, Technicolour, Disney adaptation of Charles Perrault's famous, 17th Century fairy tale features dazzling, story-book style animation that may actually surprise those accustomed to the softer style of the studio's other feature-length cartoons.

Nevertheless, Sleeping Beauty, in all of its splendour, is the last genre classic to be supervised by Walt Disney himself and belongs on any list of the best children's films (while having the added asset of being enjoyable for adults, as well).

This film is a real treat of fantasy, adventure and magic.

My favorite Disney princess, the art in this movie is beautiful and the story of course is fantastic. Maleficent is also my favorite Disney villain.

Saw as a child of 7 or 8. Re-watched as an adult of 64. Just delightful. This movie stands the test of time.

This animated film, upon its 1959 release, did not fare as well with movie audiences as Disney's previous classics. Reportedly this came as a great surprise and disappointment to Walt Disney who, as others have noted here, supervised its creation. (Meanwhile "101 Dalmatians," released just a couple of years later and featuring new animation techniques and a more modern look and sound, was much more popular--to Mr. Disney's great annoyance.)
Happily the gorgeously drawn and painted and wonderfully acted--in particular, Eleanor Audley's voice work as the haughty, elegant Maleficent is a standalone marvel, her villainy both slyly amusing and the stuff of childhood nightmares--"Sleeping Beauty" has grown steadily in audience appreciation and is now a perennial favorite.

Maleficent: I really felt quite distressed at not receiving an invitation.
Merriweather: You weren't wanted.
Maleficent: Not wa--Oh, dear, what an awkward situation.
