I can't give this series enough praise! A BBC TV series circa 1986, without exaggeration, should be awarded 10 out of 5 stars! Suffice it to say, this is a "must see" for those who truly appreciate quality acting, film making, photography/lighting, editing, music, drama, film noir, satire, and complex psychological material rife for analysis (for viewers who are arm chair shrinks)! You must see this 6 episode series. Hailed as a premier masterpiece for TV series by TV critic David Bianculli, I keep asking myself why it took this long for me to "discover" this landmark film. Written by Dennis Potter, starring Michael Gambon as Philip Marlow, P.I. it is full of subtle yet complex twists and turns, fantasy, hallucinations and a bit of reality...we are never sure. Marlow recalls his childhood from the perspective of a young boy while he is a patient in a long-term care facility in England. He suffers from an extremely painful skin disease, arthritis, fever and depression. Potter had the same skin disease (only much worse) and is very capable of illustrating exactly what it is like to suffer alone, feeling helpless and hopeless in a large ward filled with other patients. They are cared for and visited by sensitivity-challenged nurses, doctors and holy rollers. Marlow (a writer) creates a world full of intrigue, mystery and murder to escape reality. He imagines the patients around him, nurses, doctors and his wife, as characters in his work of fiction. Unable to hold pen to paper, this all takes place in his mind...It takes an episode or 2 to put the story together, but it is well worth your patience! You will be rewarded with a wide range of emotional reactions to this series. It's all good.

This original television series is much better than the US big screen adaptation. Worth seeing, there isn't to many programs out there like this one.
