In his intriguing, inspirational book, Ben Sherwood asks readers to think: what would I do in an emergency? Freeze? Remain calm? Wait for instructions? Of course, one can't answer these questions with certainty before disaster actually strikes; one can, however, learn what it takes to survive. "The Survivor's Club" presents amazing stories of people overcoming adversity and highlights the traits that survivors share.

Why do right-handed people live longer than left-handed people? Can you make your own luck or are you born with it? Where is the best place in America to suffer a heart attack? Can having unfortunate initials (B.A.D., S.I.N, D.E.D., etc.) lead to a shorter life? Sherwood compellingly weaves the answers to these and other questions together with both personal stories of survivors and scientific research. These accounts of tragedy and pain are certainly sobering but lead to overarching promise and hope.

Many aspects of this book linger after its finish including the "Rule of 3", which prioritizes survival needs, and a list of ten ways to develop resilience. These include practicing optimism, developing a moral compass, facing fears and establishing a supportive social network.

Finally, the book asks: what type of survivor are you? Sherwood lays out five broad archetypes and even includes a quiz to identify personalities as The Fighter, The Believer, The Connector, The Thinker or The Realist. A fascinating and universally appealing read.
