These stories have the O. Henry surprise ending. The characters are completely drawn even though there is the limited space of a short story. It seems, in many of them, that Lippman is practicing characterizing villains. I kept going on to the next story to see what interesting ending would turn up.

Although I have never read Laura Lippman, I was intrigued by this set of stories by the description on the jacket. And I was not disappointed! Each story has enough twists and turns to create a rival for Jeffrey Archer, but has none of his lengthy descriptive beginnings - you are not here for the long haul and you don''t need to know everything about the characters in order to be amazed at her snappy story telling. Satisfaction is guaranteed.
