In this stark drama, Max Von Sydow plays Andreas, a loner who, despite himself, becomes involved with three of his island neighbors: a Machiavellian architect, his formless wife and the beautiful widow Anna (Liv Ullmann), a moralist who sustains herself with illusion. One of Bergman's first films to be photographed in color.

Very cerebral. No indication is given regarding von Sydow's anguish until 10 minutes before the film's end, so that his final disintegration left me unaffected rather than moved.

One of my favorite Bergmans. The meta experimentation is really interesting. There is so much genuine depth and insight in this; not many filmmakers can pull off such an oppressively grim and bleak tone without it becoming silly, but Bergman was a master of this kind of material, and always keeps it feeling honest and human.
