Considering Katherine Hepburn's canon, this is one of the weakest of the bunch. Fred MacMurray's character is inexplicably attracted to her regardless, and we see a dull love affair slowly unfurl. Sorry Kate, I was bored. We'll blame it on George Stevens.

I loved this movie! I want to get a copy of my own. This movie was very sweet. You can't help but feel for Alice and her family at times. This movie has given me a huge crush on Fred MacMurray!

Hepburn does much with little.

Reasons to watch this film: 1. young Katherine H's brilliance and F MacMurray's charm. 2. speaking parts for African-American actors, especially Hattie McDaniel. They all play domestics, but their small roles are less degrading than usual for that period in Hollywood.

The script is poor. Most characters are pure stock. The leading man hardly develops, but MacMurray does his best with his handsome face and smile.

This is George Stevens' first serious film and we get to see why Katherine Hepburn received the record number of Oscar nominations during her acting career. Hepburn displays great range as a dreamer, as a lower class girl drowning in high society and just as a daughter showing true love for her parents. The director was forced to film a Hollywood ending, rather than a more realistic, real world ending. This is a rare film for its time where African-Americans, usually forced to play buffoons, are allowed to display respectful characters. It was a joy to see a true gem when one was expecting something merely very good.
