One of the first Hollywood films directed by a woman (actress Ida Lupino).

For some weird reason this low-budget, b&w, psycho-killer movie from 1953 seemed to drag on forever even though its running time was only a mere 70 minutes in length..... With one dead eyelid that won't close, 28 year-old, Emmet Myers is The Hitch-Hiker's murderous maniac.... As this film's title suggests, Emmet likes to hitch-hike and because he's such a certified looney his way of repaying anyone who's kind enough to give him a ride is to cold-bloodedly shoot them dead and then rob them of their valuables..... From Seattle to Mexico, it's "bang! bang! bang!" all the way for Emmet until, of course, he gets careless and, then, sure enough, the law closes in on him.... Need I say more about this piece of mediocrity?

I wanted to like this one so much more. "Ida Lupino, noir film director" is my idea of heaven. She is tripped up by her own script, which is mostly dreadful, and the low budget, which I assume was beyond her control. Still, the interaction between the three principals is authentic enough, sometimes even subtle. Drink! when someone turns on the radio and the newscaster gives an update on their own story. EXTRAS: the cry of a circling vulture, which sounds like, and probably is, the voice of Ms. Lupino. Did I mention this is a low budget film?
