It took me nearly until the end of this movie to realize that Richard Gere was both an officer and a gentleman. Frustrating. Gere enrolls in officer training in small town Washington, falls in love with Debra Winger, and clashes with a no nonsense drill instructor (Louis Gossett Jr. who won an Oscar). I guess it's romantic, but mostly it's just bad. Richard Gere is pretty much always miscast. Look for a young David Caruso. Featuring the hit song "Up Where We Belong." Director Taylor "Hack" Hackford's other big movie of the 80s, "Against All Odds," also had a hit song.

Today this movie is a little milk-and-water, but in 1982 the lifestyle was totaly different.

Many people joined the US Navy after watching this movie.

It was a low budget and was a success on the theaters.

It portrayed faithfully with life in the Navy OCS. See the user comments on IMBD.

It's good fun.

Louis Gossett Jr. should not have won the Oscar. The character is a cliché and lacks depth.

A nice romantic tale with some excellent acting, especially Gosett's portrayal of the mean drill seargent.
