The Freeling family is a typical middle class family living in the peaceful Cuesta Verde Estates. Steve, his wife Diane, 16-year-old daughter Dana, 8-year-old Robbie, and 5-year-old Carol Ann live in a track house. Soon strange things begin to happen around the house; the pet canary dies, mysterious storms occur, and Carol Ann is summoned to the TV set, where a strange shaft of green light hits her and causes the room to shake. As the curious events continue, Carol Ann is repeatedly drawn to the television, where she begins to talk to "the TV people." Soon Carol Ann is sucked into a closet, disappearing from this reality plane. Unable to find his daughter, Steve consults Dr. Lesh, a para-psychologist from a nearby college. Lesh finds that the paranormal phenomena is so strong in the Freelong household she is unable to deal with it and sends for clairvoyant and professional exorcist Tangina to examine the house in hopes of finding Carol Ann. Tangina makes a horrifying discovery: Carol Ann is alive and in the house, but is being held on another spectral plane.

A garbage "ghost" story. Read ManMachine's comments further down for the best review of this junk.

I'll be honest; this is the first real horror movie I've seen, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I found it to be just the right amount of scary: enough to keep me on the edge of my seat, but not so much that I'll be losing sleep at night. There's not much character development or anything like that, but the film doesn't really need it as it's just a fun movie meant to scare viewers; and it does that very well.

After having just watched the horrible remake, I had to go back and see the original.
The special effects are dated, but this is a 1982 movie, so it's expected. Script and character wise, it is far better than the remake.

(*Spoilers Ahead!*)

When it comes to the likes of horror flicks, Poltergeist has got to be one of the all-time, most over-rated pieces of movie-junk that I have ever seen. There's no ifs, ands, or buts, about it.

There's absolutely no subtlety, or artistic restraint in evidence anywhere in this flick. We, the viewer, are literally bulldozed to death, and then buried alive by an onslaught of preposterous special effects that are only there to distract us from the plain, simple truth that - "THIS FLICK REALLY SUCKS!!"

Just like The Shining - I cannot figure out, for the life of me, why so many people continue (32 years later) to still make such a ridiculous fuss over this one. Let's face it - Poltergeist isn't that good. It isn't!

For one thing - Would someone please tell me - What sort of a property development company builds a subdivision of homes right on top of a goddamn graveyard, and only moves the headstones to another location, and leaves the actual coffins still buried there in the ground? Eh? Who??

Like, am I expected to accept, without question, that during the initial excavation of all of this property (laying sewer pipes, creating basements, building swimming pools, etc., etc.) that not a single, solitary coffin was ever dug up at this point? And - Am I also supposed to believe that the entire construction crew working on this project were actually all in on this conspiracy not to move any of the graves, and so they just built everything around them?

C'mon, now! That's just plain preposterous and idiotic.

As some sort of compensation for my attitude towards this flick - It gives me the greatest of pleasure to know that behind the scenes of this flick's production, Steven Spielberg and director Tobe Hooper were at each other's throats constantly over the direction of Poltergeist. Things got so nasty between these 2 that Hooper was eventually removed from his directorial duties, and Spielberg, himself, took over the show.

The combination of everyday suburbia with paranormal activity brought home the idea that this kind of thing could happen to anyone. Some classic Spielbergisms combining crazy, spooky, frantic scenes with humourous dialogue. The dolly zoom (ala hitchcock) of the hallway is very effective.

Frightening or Intense Scenes: What Dimmu16 said, as well as when the guy "rips his face off."

Dimmu16 Apr 29, 2012

Violence: Well its a horror film. The family is attacked!

Coarse Language: The occasional swears.

Dimmu16 Apr 29, 2012

Frightening or Intense Scenes: When Carol Anne is sucked into the other sitde. And when Robbie is kidnapped. Oh and when they try to get Carol Anne back near the end. And a few others.

Dimmu16 Apr 09, 2012

Other: I have noticed that a lot of the actors have passed away. Sad! Carol Anne - Heather O'Rourke (1975-1988 12 years old), Dana - Dominique Dunne (1959-1982 22 years old), Tangina - Zelda Rubinstein (1933-2010 76 years old), Dr Lesh - Beatrice Straight (1914-2001 86 years old). Some people think this is the work of The Poltergeist Curse.

Tangina: Help me tie this around my waist.

Diane: What do you think you're doing?

Tangina: I'm going in after her.

Diane: She won't come to you. Let me go.

Tangina: You've never done this before.

Diane: Neither have you.

[pause]

Tangina: You're right. You go.
