I don't have high expectations for action movies. They should be dumb, loud, and fun, the movie equivalent of a hamburger, cheap whiskey, or garage rock. Yet decent American action movies are few and far between these days. Despite having a really good cast and some good shoot outs, "Smokin' Aces" never really finds its groove. Writer-director Joe Carnahan tries for the retro cool and dark humor of Tarantino and the over the top action of Richard Rodriguez, but fails at both. The presence of Ray Liotta will just remind you of "Goodfellas," which is an unfortunate comparison. You could have fun connecting all the actors to other crime/thriller movies they were in (Ben Affleck in "Reindeer Games," Peter Berg directed Piven in "Very Bad Things," etc.). Followed by an unnecessary sequel.

This wasn't to bad for a shoot em up type movie. I would only recommend this movie to fans of tons of action violence.

When a Las Vegas performer-turned-snitch named Buddy Israel decides to turn state's evidence and testify against the mob, it seems that a whole lot of people would like to make sure he's no longer breathing.
