American born director Jules Dassin did classic film noir/crime films like "Naked City" and "Brute Force," but was a victim of the blacklist and went on to make films in England ("Night and the City") and France ("Rififi"). "Rififi" has a good claim to being the greatest heist film ever made (it certainly has the greatest heist sequence). This feels like a lighter, splashier version of "Rififi," with glamorous people, a la "The Pink Panther," planning to steal a priceless dagger. The cast is enjoyable, as is the Istanbul setting, but it's a bit fluffy. The heist sequence is well-done and Peter Ustinov as the schlubby, small time hustler who unwittingly gets dragged into the crime won an Oscar for his performance.

Fine cast who've all done better work elsewhere carp & caper their way through this garish, pseudo-glamorous sixties escapade taken from an Eric Ambler story. The heist itself set many standards for all that followed. Don't miss the Turkish Oil Wrestling bit. Nice cars.
