Rural China, 1990. Bai is a pretty and enterprising college student who travels to a remote, mist shrouded mountain village in the company of a pair of affable strangers. But what Bai thought was an expedition to gather herbs turns horrific when her fellow travelers sell her into slavery. Contrasts the exotic beauty of China with the cruelty of a system that tolerates human trafficking and a community that thrives on it.

Unforgettable. Ignorance, poverty and despair can turn common people into thugs and criminals.

Very moving story, tragically true. Didn't really like the end but I would still recommend watching.

Young Chinese woman travels into Northern China with two business associates (or so she thought) only to be drugged & sold to a local villager as a slave / wife. This is apparently common practice in this region. Movie depicts her struggle to escape the torment (on several occasions).

Bestial villagers kidnap young, beautiful, educated urban Chinese women to be sex-slaves ("wives") for life, in defiance of central authority.

A tragic story of the consequences of female infanticide in rural China. The subsequent lack of local rural brides offers criminals the opportunity to kidnap young women from Chinese cities for forced marriages consummated by rape. The "blind eye" of authorities enables the practice to flourish in spite of the law.

A small glimmer of hope for change is provided by a sympathetic, enlightened school teacher and one of his students.

The rugged mountains and primitive way of life of northern China is skillfully captured by the movie photographer.
