This is a very good account of WWII from the point of view of the English people rather than from a military perspective. Its heartbreaking to think that someone born in 1900 would have lived through the horrors, loss and hardship of both the First and Second World war. Aunt Maude in this books represents such people.

With four main characters in this book, one has to be careful to make a mental note of the background of each as they come up or the story could get confusing. Overall though this is a well written story with just the right balance of description dialogue and action. Well worth the read both for entertainment and educational value.
