I loved this story when I was younger. Re-reading it as an adult I enjoyed the language as much as when I was a child. Perhaps it was the time in which Dahl wrote the novel but I was disappointed by some of the characterizations: the Queen's maid is older, heavy-set and not very bright; only men are in the armed forces protecting the country; boys would not like a dream a girl would like and vice versa; when the Queen calls Baghdad and talks to the Sultan wondering if anything unpleasant had happened there overnight the reply is "We are chopping off people's heads like you are chopping parsley". *Gulp*! There are somethings I'd definitely not read to my niece as I would not wish to maintain stereotypes.
