Done by director/actor (and husband to Gena Rowlands) 'John Cassavetes'. 'Cassavetes' rarely had scrips for his directorial films. It was his style to let his actors improvise their dialog. It shows, at times, in the film (especially from the kid). For an early '80's movie, it was "ok" and/or a curiousity at best.
