This book switches back and forth between two interconnected stories - of Isabelle (and later Taib) and Mariata (and Amastan).
Of the two, I much preferred the story of Mariata, although found that my interest was slow, but once I was hooked, I didn't want to put the book down.
I found that I had somewhat predicted the twist at the end, but that didn't diminish the effect of the twist, nor the story as a whole for me.
I commend the author for her research and her ability to fit the history, culture and myth of the Tuareg people into this book without it weighing down the story.
