The first scene when we are introduced to the Harold character I truly thought he was a young boy. So innocent and naive with such a wide eyed stare and a baby face. It wasn't until later when I saw how tall he was standing next to others that I could believe he was a young man. I mostly enjoyed this movie but there were a few things just too unbelievable that made it seem fake and insults the viewer's intelligence. For one, all Harold's mock suicide attempts. There is no way Harold, or any human, can float around face down in a pool motionless for so long without some sort of breathing apparatus. Or his 'Hari kari' (aka Seppuku) reenactment looked all too real... And all that blood!! Where did it come from? The girl watching then joins in the faux carnage, adding copious amounts of blood to the scene. Then walks in Harold's snobbish, society focused mother who's ho-hum exclamation is merely a mild agitation at Harold's repeated deviance from accepted social behavior. The cop that chases, catches, loses them then nearly catches them again (repeat) is laughable at being such a bumbling buffoon. Too unbelievable as that would never, even slightly, happen in real life. The final time the cop catches them in their stolen vehicle, with a list of other offenses & thefts... why didn't he cuff em (didn't he have handcuffs?), why didnt he call it in or request backup since he's alone and they kept getting away?? No! None of that happens. He orders them each out of the car, then gets in the driver's seat as he proceeds to write up violations... WHAT COP DOES THAT?!?? Just too phoney. Next thing Maude & Harold jump on the cop's motorbike and speed off, burning rubber as Maude always does with her fast n loose dangerous driving escapades. It is entertaining in a tongue in cheek kinda way. Same way that a cartoon is far from reality but it still entertains us. The Cat Stevens music throughout is very fitting.
