Ever the Brave was captivating, full of excitement, the characters were dynamic and kept me wondering what was going to happen next. Lord Jamis and Phelia had been working together to over through King Aodren, to allow channelers to have the freedom to live in peace. This all started because of Aodren’s father and his purge proclamation against channelers 18 years ago. Channeler girls were being taken from Shaerdan, leaving the Malamian kingdom to be blamed for their disappearances. With channeler girls going missing and the blame placed on Malam, the promise of a war between Malam and Shaerdan was on the rise. To avoid such a disastrous conflict between both lands, Cohen, Britta, Finn, Lirra and King Aodren had to find the girls in time. The characters within the book were easily seen for who they truly were, whether an ally to the King’s cause or an enemy. With Britta’s spiriter ability to be able to tell if someone is speaking the truth or not made it a little easier to know who should be trusted. Having Britta find out the truth about her mother and where she comes from, helped her to decide what it is she wanted to do with her powers and how to use it. After becoming a member of the Channelers Guild, Britta was able to see her purpose and understand what she wanted for her life and the lives of those just like her who have been prosecuted for being born with channeler abilities. The imagery within the book allowed me to understand the setting in which the story takes place. The wintry setting of the mountains and woods surrounding the city of Malam, helped me understand some of the challenges faced by the characters as they race to defeat Lord Jamis and Phelia. If you enjoy a bit of romance, thrill with some amount of supernatural ability, this book would be perfect for you. Reviewed by N.B. for the Cloverdale Teen Book Review Project
