I found this to be romantic, and it did follow Fitzgerald's novel about two people of Germanic ancestry falling in love--Gatsby (poor at the time) and Daisy (wealthy), and then Daisy (played by Mia Farrow) instead marries a wealthy Irish guy, and later Gatsby (played by Robert Redford) after becoming wealthy, pursues Daisy by throwing elaborate parties at his Long Island estate, even though she is married to someone else. The novel portrays Daisy as more of an airhead than in this film. It was interesting to see on film a cultural perspective of white America during that time period.
