Wow. Wasn't expecting too much out of this film...nor would anyone based upon the synopsis. But it is much more than a little "coming out" story. It's a truly loving memoir of a family and a time period that is remarkably specific. It's this specificity that lifts it above the routine. It's the dash of Catholic mysticism, the allure of androgyny in the 70's, the poisoned apple of parental approval....all whilst drawing a group portrait that is anything but generic. It's all about the important dichotomies: love/hate, acceptance/rejection, spiritual/corporeal, mother/father, disco/rock. All with a kind heart...and glory be! A sense of humor.
