I had a great time reading City of Bones after binge watching the television adaptation titled Shadowhunters on Freeform. Honestly, the writing is mediocre, and Cassandra Clare manages to take every fantasy trope and roll them all into a giant, messy burrito of a book. And yet, it totally works as fun, fast-paced, popcorn, Urban Fantasy fare that will help you escape from the "mundane-ness" of reality. Imagine if the characters from Twilight were a part of the Harry Potter Universe with a good shake of supernaturals added in for good flavor, and you will get the basic premise of the book. Personally, this was just the kind of mindless entertainment that I needed, and I've already begun the next books in the series. As an aside, I think that the television series is much better than the book because it focuses more on the tertiary characters who are far more interesting than the protagonists Jace and Clary. Also, I'm a Malec shipper for life!
